For many years pneumatic tyres when fitted have always been filled to their correct pressure using compressed air. The compressed air is a mixture of air from the atmosphere, water and water vapour, produced when the atmospheric air is compressed in the air compressor. This mixture is then pumped into the tyre so that the tyre is correctly inflated to carry the weight of the vehicle to which they are fitted. It is recommended that tyre pressures are checked at least once a month, as it is likely that a loss of pressure can naturally occur with the air escaping through the carcass of the tyre, as even though tyres are manufactured with an impervious liner, they can still be slightly porous and therefore let the air escape.
When tyres are underinflated, this creates drag which has a detrimental effect on the vehicles performance and also increases fuel consumption. With underinflated tyres you are also more likely to get a puncture.
Nitrogen has much better pressure retention properties than compressed air, which means your tyres remain at the correct pressure for much longer. The five main benefits of using nitrogen to inflate your tyres are:
1: Better handling and road holding
2: Reduces tread wear and increases tyre life by up to 25%
3: Correct inflation pressures reduce puncture risk by up to 33%
4: Reduced rolling resistance improves miles per gallon by 2%
5: Improved pressure retention
TyreFinders fully endorses the use of nitrogen as an inflation media and will use it to inflate your tyres for a small fee, but only ever on your say so, unlike other companies who carry out the service and charge you after.
